Abstract
In order to investigate the prognostic significance of c-erbB-2 over expression, immunohistochemical staining for the c-erbB-2 protein was performed on sections from paraffin embedded tissue blocks of 89 primary breast cancers and those of 11
metastatic
lymph nodes. The over all incidence of positive staining was 31%(28/89) and ductal carcinoma in situ showed high rate of positive staining(50%). Positive staining was associated with larger tumor size. Staining results of all but one metastatic
lymph
nodes were the same with primary breast cancer. In univariate analysis, nodal status, tumor size and DNA ploidy showed prognostic significance. c-erbB-2 appeared to influence the prognosis but not statistucally significant. In multivariate
analysis,
above three factors had also independent prognostic significance. In node negative group, patients with high s-phase and positive c-erbB-2 staining appeared to have a worse disease free survival. In node positive group, patients with aneuploid
and
positive c-erbB-2 staining had the worst prognosis.
